Modern transportation technology gives us an incredible amount of information. We can calculate mileage, compare routes, estimate transit times, monitor traffic, and track a shipment across hundreds or thousands of miles.
But a route on a screen and a route from behind the wheel aren’t quite the same thing.

When a driver spends additional time waiting to load or unload, their available hours continue to matter. The next leg of the trip may need to change, a planned stopping point may no longer be reachable, or a delivery appointment can become more difficult to meet.

Imagine a driver expects to be loaded at 9:00 a.m., but the process takes an hour longer than planned.
That additional hour reduces the time available for the next portion of the trip. The driver may no longer reach the original planned stopping point. That could mean searching for parking in a different area or at a busier time. The next morning, the driver may start from a different location than expected, putting additional pressure on the delivery appointment.
One hour at the beginning of the trip has now influenced several other parts of the shipment.
Drivers understand these second-order effects because they experience them firsthand. They see how a delay at one facility affects driving time, how driving time affects parking, and how all of it can eventually affect another appointment or shipment.
That’s valuable perspective for everyone involved in transportation. Good logistics isn’t only about solving the problem directly in front of you. It’s also about understanding what that problem might affect next.
Drivers Know When a Plan Looks Good on Paper
One of the biggest differences between planning freight and driving freight is the difference between what is technically possible and what is consistently practical.
A schedule can work perfectly on paper. The mileage makes sense, the transit time fits, and the appointment is achievable. But sometimes that plan leaves almost no room for the real world.

Think about the experience accumulated by someone who has spent years driving professionally.

The people closest to a process often know things about that process that aren’t obvious from farther away. Professional drivers are about as close to the physical movement of freight as anyone can get.

A single complaint about a facility could be an isolated experience. But when multiple drivers report the same issue, there may be something worth investigating.
Perhaps trucks are routinely waiting longer than expected. Maybe check-in instructions aren’t clear. Maybe appointment expectations don’t reflect how long the facility actually takes to load.
Driver feedback can help uncover these patterns.
Transportation teams can use that information to track recurring detention issues, improve facility instructions, reconsider unrealistic appointment expectations, identify problematic locations, and look for patterns across multiple shipments.

On a transportation dashboard, a shipment can look relatively simple.
There is an origin, a destination, an appointment time, an ETA, a current location, and a status.
From the driver’s seat, that same shipment looks very different. It’s a series of roads, facilities, decisions, conditions, schedules, and unexpected situations that have to be managed from pickup through delivery.
Professional drivers bring experience and judgment to that process every day. Their perspective gives the rest of the supply chain something valuable: a view of transportation as it actually happens on the road.
As the industry recognizes professional truck drivers during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, it’s a good reminder that appreciation can extend beyond saying thank you. It can mean respecting drivers’ time, recognizing their expertise, and paying attention to what their experience can teach us.
